Non-stick Auto Finish

Non-stick Auto Finish

An auto coating instead of paint that is similar to the baked-on Teflon finish and texture on a T-fal fry pan, tuned up for application onto large automotive surfaces. In addition to being a vehicle you could wash with a high-pressure hose, no detergent, no wax, no chamois, the texture may be more aerodynamic than a perfectly smooth surface, as has been found in submarine hulls.

Any hard coating will have serious problems in an accident: even with preplanned break zones you're going to have some VERY hard and sharp extra bits flying about.

       I like the idea anyway.

^Teflon's not a hard coating, that I've noticed.

It's a good'ish idea but is the substance in question up to the wear'n'tear ?

I've wondered for a while why cars aren't Teflon coated. It's not that heavy (and car paint can be heavy anyway) and it seems durable from scratching. Maybe it wouldn't hold up to UV light, rain and wind well enough. You could also make the body panels out of Dyneema, which is just as slippery as Teflon, but that would be a bit expensive.

Take a key to the bottom of your frying pan and you will no longer wonder. Teflon's durable, but it's not _that_ durable.

Kevlar. Well, it's 'non-stick' for bullets, anyway. No need for a 'finish', or even paint. Can fleet-sized batches of Kevlar be tinted? Stand by for results of research...

There are a lot of ceramic coatings available nowadays that purport to do the same thing. My main objection was going to be that the choice of color would be very limited. But, take a look on the roads and all cars are monochrome nowadays anyway.

This isn't an issue. At the scales we're talking about it's just going to crack. There's not many things harder than glass on a car, and there's already several square meters of that. A coating would be much thinner and bonded to a relatively flexible surface.
