What does it mean when it starts playing Ride of the Valkyries?! |

I read about some researchers a while back who programmed something like this for tracking the stock market, and it would play very dire funereal music when the market was heading down, and peppy little tunes when it was headed up. |

I wrote a simple app once to allow someone to hear an entire year's weather file. The idea was in quality controlling huge amounts of data - if you hear a loud noise the temperature may have changed faster than physically possible. It turns out that at least for weather data the resulting noises turn out strongly annoying and I wouldn't want to hear it for more than a minute or two. Pictures are just plain prettier. |

I played with this in HP OpenView and *cough* Cabletron Spectrum on single devices with some success, though you wouldnt want to listen to it for long. I never tried applying it to the hundreds of devices I was monitoring because the obvious result would be useless noise. Ill stick with the alarms, notification, and pretty colors. |
