Multicolored Broccoli

Broccoli dipped in food coloring, mostly for kids

Many raw fresh vegetables are actually quite tastey. It seems that many kids seem to have convinced themselves that such can not be true.

I am amazed seeing how big some kids are for their age after hearing their parents tell me that they just Won't eat vegetables.

Imagine a side of multi-colored broccoli next to a side of tri-colored slices of carrots - like a bowl of Trix(tm) in vegetable form.

The reason I thought of this is that, though my kids seem to eat vegetables more than most kids their age, it seems that anything new to them is judged a lot based on it's presentation (If it's green, they are leary).

I wasn't really sure you could dye veggies until I saw this. I was thinking of how to do up a colored gravy at first. [Zimmy, Aug 28 2006]

Broccoflower is chartreuse and cauliflower comes in an orange color already.

       There is also purple califlower

The stereotypical kids dislike the way that vegetables are usually prepared--boiled spinach, mushy carrots--and rightly so, as all the vitamins and goodness are gone. Which puts them off raw veggies, which they would have liked if given the chance.

If you want to color cauliflower, cut a fresh end on the stem, then stand it up it in a bit of colored water. That works for carnations, at least.

Or go shopping somewhere interesting. And let the kids help.

One could probably make pink cauliflower using beet juice and this method. hmmm...

That's what did for me. I honestly thought I hated veggies until I started going out with the woman who became my wife. It was only after tasting barely cooked, organic stuff did I realize that those growy things are mmm-mmm good.

The only reason I put "Trix(TM)" was a fading memory of some letter [Jutta] recieved, possibly from Marrs about someone mentioning Ta-wix bars without the trademark afterwards.
I've searched & can't find it, though. - I can't find my juvenile idea put forth in response about Ozzy bars either, which makes sense.

Zimmy - I remember that too, but I can't seem to find it :(.

Just don't color it blue. I once had some blue (sponge bob) mac and cheese. Wondered why it was so cheap. (29 cents at the 99 cent store.) I had to turn the lights out choke it down.

There is something buried in my reptile head that thinks blue is deadly.

oh...the top part is the best and I (wastefully) throw the stalks away!! That is why they sell broccoli heads separately for more money!
xandram, May 10 2013

Xandram: a culinary tip for you. 1. Get those stalks. 2. Shave the green off. You will have a polygonal stick that is whitish. 3. Eat it up yum. That green hide is tough but underneath it is better than bok choi.
