Each of these interlocking jigsaw pieces is autonomous as far as power and memory but is coordinated with the others since they are initiated together when the box is opened. Each piece displays its part of a movie scene or a sequence of stills that change every few seconds.

This would be a much more challenging puzzle, joining e-cardboard pieces with others, while all their surfaces alter appearance, though in phase.

The computer game version of this idea. [Amos Kito, Oct 04 2004, last modified Oct 21 2004]

Computer Jigsaw Puzzles Software http://www.livingscenes.com/
Living Scenes Jigsaw Puzzles is a collection of full motion computer jigsaw puzzles and software on CD-ROM. Each jigsaw puzzle subject is a short, seamlessly looped movie that plays within the jigsaw puzzle's pieces even while the pieces are scattered around the playing area. [BirdMan, Apr 01 2005]

And the bun slowly pieces itself together.

Or how about a non-movie hologram version, so that all the pieces look different from different directions? Or is that a half-baked idea already?

       Brilliant.

The high initial cost (compared to your average cardboard jigsaw puzzle) would be offset by the fact that you could (potentially) download new movies without having to repeat your purchase.

I wonder if anyone has done a software version of this with drag-and-drop interlocking jigsaw pieces of movie-fragment on the computer monitor?

When color e-paper becomes a commodity, the pieces will all fall in to place and you're golden.

If I tried to do one of these it would quickly become the Jigsaw Massacre. (+)anywho

Cool. I hate jigsaws but I love movies. So conflicted now...

With future miniaturization you could have two different movies playing on each side to add to the confusion. +

Thanks for the link [Amos Kito] - my wondering is now redundant as you have provided the answer.

I think if you changed this from "jigsaw puzzle" to "Rubik's Cube", you'd have a game that was equally challenging and possibly actually able to be made with today's power and memory capabilities. Plus, you wouldn't ever have to worry about inevitably losing that one crucial jigsaw piece that completes your movie.
