Mines with time released herbicide for future marker

Mines with a delayed release herbicide that will clearly mark where they are.

An international treaty needs to be passed that would make it mandatory for all future land mines laid to contain a time released herbicide, (that releases for years) or detectible chemical marker (for desert areas), that would make future dection possible after the strategic time period for the laying of the mine had passed. If armies have to have them at least help us find them after they are no longer needed!

       Still a good idea, though.

I agree. Though if you're going to time release something, you might as well just time release a non-explosive self-destruct mechanism.

Why not do the opposite, put seeds in them them that sprout a distinctive plant? Might last longer than the herbicide, and better for the environment.

       "Desert" areas, not "dessert" areas.

       Desert, like my name.

There you go... biological warfare. Mounds of dandelions and kudzu vines sprouting up everywhere, overtaking the opium fields.

This could be used for cluster bomb bomblets, that tend to pose the same dangers as landmines if they fail to explode after they are scattered.

Hmm...landmines around the sweets section of the buffet. That ought to make people think twice about that second helping of brownies.
