After the your first move, your pawns would all move to the right one space, the furthest one moving forward rather than falling off the board. Same with your opponent's pieces.
All the pieces on the back would move to the left, the rook on the left hand side moving forward into the space created
by the moving pawns.
After your opponent moves, that pawn, followed by the other pieces like a conga line moves to the left.
If any pieces reach the center of the board they cycle back to the rear corner to start their movement towards the center again. If opposing pieces collide, they to are cycled back to the starting position.
So your strategy would have to take into consideration where the pieces would be in a few moves. Obviously this would only be practical with a video game chess set.
The pieces would be dynamically moving more like actual military elements on the battlefield, not just sitting there with one single change happening at a time. Real battlefields don't work that way. This adds an element of reality and possibly excitement.
Dumped the 4D concept, too complicated.

Chess already contains the dimension of time as each movment is linear and can not reverse. This seems more like Mobius Chess where everything is played out while being gobbled up by the centre and spit back out at the outer fringes. |

Actually I meant the 4th dimension to be the dynamic configuration (yea, that's the ticket) so more of a time/space thingy. (don't say thingy, it sounds dumb) a time space contrivance. A progressively evolving interface (Ohh, that'll work!) challenging the user to envisage (that's a good one) the evolving matrix (another good one) and adjust their attacks through the changing... the evolving... thingamabob. (Dammit!) |

I'll try to think of some other words. Now to be clear, there isn't A 4th dimension per se right? Or is there? Can't one assign any variable and call it another dimension? What's the rule book say? |

Now that's if you're not happy with the title, if the idea itself isn't clear it's basically just all the pieces shifting every move after a player makes a move so your path to get a particular piece would change over time. A drawing would make it clearer. |

Also "a 3d chessboard" is undefined. Is it 8 boards? If so what are the movement rules between layers? In which dimension(s) is "the center" defined? How can my pawns all move to the right and yet be moving toward the center? But by the time you lay out the whole thing I don't think you'll be left with a fun, or even playable, game. |

They zig zag. The pawns all move to the right forcing the far right one to move forward one space rather than falling off the right side of the board. Then, after the opposing player moves, it moves left. It continues across the board till it hits the left side then moves forward and reverses course till it eventually reaches the middle if it's not taken first. Picture two opposing armies marching towards each other in a mirror image conga lines. |

Don't know if it would be fun or not but it's definitely never been tried before. Sounds kind of stressful frankly, but that might add an element of excitement. |

All the pieces move at the same time in the same path layout including the one you just moved and the shift triggered by that move. Picture pieces floating on a zig zag river. |

So what would possibly be interesting is placing pieces in anticipation of them moving into an attack position while being aware that your opponent is doing the same thing. |
