It's been noted that electric cars are very quiet which
can
pose a hazard to pedestrians who don't hear the cars
coming. Proposed solutions have included recorded
engine
sounds, tones or even music.
It would be interesting to be able to customize the sound
of your
car to suit your personality
or mood for the day. These
sound effect loops would be the same volume of a
regular
internal combustion engine and would be recordings of
moving, hazardous vehicles, animals or objects.
Rampaging elephant, rolling bolder, that scream from
Dark
Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd, the sound of your car
would be uniquely you.
Keep in mind, these wouldn't be loud, just as loud as an
auto engine so you'd hear it. It wouldn't be as if you'd
have
to cover your ears if the driver chose a Saturn 5 rocket,
it
would be a very quiet Saturn 5 rocket, just loud enough
to
know a car was coming.

Whoa there. For fifty years, large parts of humanity have
been living with the constant noise of traffic. Finally,
someone invents a car that is not so noisy. And now you
want to make them noisy again. But not just noisy.
Personalizably noisy. Even "just loud enough"
personalizable noisy. |
|
|
Just no. I mean, for fuxake, I'm now going to be surrounded
by random car ringtones? Seriously, what were you thinking
there? Do I care that you think the theme tune to Pirates of
the Caribbean represents your personality? |
|
|
Make cars quiet, with the possible exception of the
occasional V12 making the throaty burble that god
intended. If we lose a few pedestrians, well, shoulda
looked. |
|
|
We predict the most popular sound choice for BMWs will be "Tie Fighter". |
|
|
//Seriously, what were you thinking there?// |
|
|
I was thinking of making cars that created different
sounds. |
|
|
But if the sound does have to be standardized, and I'm
seeing that's already being worked on, I don't see the
problem with a 60 cycle hum, the universal sound for
electricity. Seems like a no brainer to me. Gas engines
makes explody sounds, steam engines make steam sound,
electrical motor makes electricity sound. If you're riding a
horse, horse sounds, OK you get the point. |
|
|
Could infrasound implement "ominous silence"? Or maybe, for
that, you'd need anti-noise technology. You know, "suddenly
there were no chirping birds". That might engage directly and
viscerally with an inclination to pause before stepping off the
kerb. |
|
|
//60 cycle hum, the universal sound for electricity// That
would be 50Hz, then. |
|
|
Should this not be "Choose"? |
|
|
No, he said it needs to be standardized, so it's already chosed. |
|
|
I always thought it should be a little bell on the front like a tram has. The bell could go ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, all the time, at a rate of tinging proportional to the speed of the vehicle. |

Saw that coming down 5th avenue. Was going to
address it then thought... naaa. |

While I love the spirit of your idea [doc] I would think there
is a certain Darwinian desireableness in changes in society
that weed out the slice of society that is too resistant to
change even in the name of their own safety, changes like
cell phones and silent electric cars.
People too intent on their cell phones and other devices to
take note of the vehicles, silent or not, that regularly
traverse the roadways are quickly and beneficially culled
from the gene pool. |

Could be tang for reversing |
|
|
Wait, so you're saying in reverse it would go: "Tang, tang,
tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,
tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,
tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,
tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,
tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,
tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang."? |
|
|
//it's already chosed// - 13 years ago..
obviously, reversing is "gnit" |
|
|
//Wait, so you're saying in reverse it would go: "Tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang."?// Yes, that sounds about right. |
|
|
I thought that the sound of running water would be good.
So 1 or 2 cars sound like a little creek; but a busy road (or
heavy vehicles) sounds like a river. |
|
|
//Wait, so you're saying in reverse it would go:
"Tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,
tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,
tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,
tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,
tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,
tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,
tang, tang, tang."?// Yes,in reverse it would go Tang,
tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,
tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,
tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,
tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,
tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,
tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,
tang. |
|
|
Because I like the part where it says tang. |
|
|
Or toot, toot, toot, etc. |
|
|
////Wait, so you're saying in reverse it would go: "Tang,
tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,
tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,
tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,
tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,
tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,
tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,
tang."?// Yes,in reverse it would go Tang, tang, tang, tang,
tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,
tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,
tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,
tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,
tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,
tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang.// |
|

So, basically, you're saying that he's saying it would go
"Tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,
tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,
tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,

tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,
tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,

""Tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,

No, I didn't say //Wait, so you're saying in reverse it would
go: "Tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang, tang,

Oh, wait - is that what you said I said? |
|
|
And so, my fellow Aldeberans, that is what became of the
race that called themselves "humans". Even with the
development of ultra-low-energy quantum-bit displays, the
displaying of the word "tang" eventually required more power
than their sun could produce. And yet they never discovered
who put the bomp in the bomp bah bomp bah bomp. |

I don't like to use the word "hero" when describing myself,
but I don't need a premise to type tang a lot of times. |

The copy-paste is strong here today.
(I once made an MS Word macro to do an exponential copy-

how many words I got to before Word complained; 2^20 or
so...) |
