I love marching bands of all kinds, but only in live performances where you can see the uniforms and appreciate the co-ordinated movements.

My halfbaked idea proposal for a marching band is that they perform while marching backwards, with equal precision of course. To compliment this difficult feat, I also expect them to play one their well known tunes in reverse.

note - this idea extends an earlier idea titled Unsingin' In The Rain

Couldn't find a marching back playing Yakity Sax and marching fast so here's a cat. https://www.youtube.../shorts/lLk7auYxmVc

I'm sure I've seen a version of this with actual video, but the internet seems to have mislaid it. [pertinax, Aug 05 2024]

Okay, this is very good. Be cool to see a lighter version where they slow down, stop, freeze for a second, them march/play backwards, then slow and stop again and reverse. Could even explain what's going on by having the leader of the band wave his baton and say "Hey, we were a bit off with that last piece, let's try it again!" then they do the backup/rewind thing, and then replay it.

Goes without saying they'd speed up and play the Benny Hill theme.

Ooh, rewind sounds interesting. As far as marching backwards, that's old hat for field performance. Backwards, sideways, facing forwards with feet pointing backwards are all standard fare.

Yea, I'm thinking that if they're just marching backwards playing a backwards song it'll just sound like noise and be confusing. If you explain what's going on and do a little bit with it I think the crowd is gonna jump to their feet and go nuts with applause. I would.

Plus backwards music is annoying, just doing a little bit around it would be a lot more enjoyable I think.

Songs are stories even when they don't have words. Read the script to a story backwards you get the same thing you get with playing a song backwards. It's like "Huh?". It's basically a confusing mess. But for a little well explained bit, this would be a show stopper. I think any marching band doing the band leader saying "Stop, we messed up that last part! Let's rewind and do it agian!" would get some part of a billion views over the years. [+]

Love it--and would watch, especially if, as [doc] suggests, we hear a bit of the forward-facing song, then hear the reverse for a bit longer, just so we get the gist/joke.

Band leader explanation unnecessary--watching/hearing the crowd's surprise as they pick up on what's happening would be interesting!

//speed up and play the Benny Hill theme// I always hear "d-d-d-Da DA duhduhduhduh DaDA duhduhduhduh DaDAdaDADAduh" when my chickens charge around the garden!

You've got bees and chickens?!? (re-thinks life choices) But I live in very expensive city! Everybody has expensive cars! It's expensive with like... money and stuff! Look at the exclusive shops! Stuff is really expensive there! (oh god what horrible life choices I've made)

Yep, I've got the standard Birds'n'Bees package installed on my quarter-acre of town land. We train all beings in Stealth mode and have so far remained undetected for 22 years. Bigby and his/her progeny are in charge of pollination, and the Girlz (chickens) are on landscaping/pest control. New this year: the Girlz have an out-of-town suitor--Russell Crow! Apparently he likes big (fluffy) butts and he cannot lie ;)

       LOL!

That's it, I'm getting some land and growing big butted chickens so they can do the chicken dance on that platform that moves to the music making them all dance. (link)

       Nice.

I'm with [RatfordSteele] on this one though.
I joined Air Cadets at 13 and got talked into joining the drill squad.
For the three years I stayed there we won our championships by suddenly doing our routine backwards and walking through ourselves at random seeming intervals.

Hire drummers. They'll tell you. Every appendage has its own brain section independent of the other sections.

Rather than playing the songs in reverse, they should suck, rather than blow, on their flutes.
