The Mapparium in Boston shows the world as it was in 1930. You can walk all the way through it, giving the impression of being right in the middle of the world.

What i propose is to create a museum that houses such mappariums.

You begin in pre-historic times, when the earth was all one continent, moving through to present day. Each mapparium will show the countries of the world at that time, or the 'groups' of people that inhabited them, i.e. the celts, aboriginies, native americans, inuit, etc.

Each mapparium will have little L.E.D.'s and text showing important events or dates, and explaining a little bit about them.

When you leave the last mapparium, you go out into the sunshine of the world, filled with a visual knowledge of historical geography.

Scale this other idea up and you could do it all in one mapparium [krelnik, Oct 21 2004]

I wanted to do a web site like that - Virtual London, Virtual New York - walk-through on-line tours showing how the cities looked in days gone by. Couldn't get the venture capital, tho.

I suppose the whole idea of a mapparium trail could be used to depict anything, which ever subject you desire. I just chose historical geography because it seemed to fit best, but yes, any subject could probably be used.

Will there be a First Person Shooter option ?

Easy to do Austrailia too ..... 10,000 BC, a barren desolate wasteland with a few nomadic hunter gatherers wandering round in loincloths, scratching on rocks ..... 2000 AD, same picture ..........

Nothing personal, just bitter about the cricket.

       Nice idea. Interactive museum stylee.

I enjoyed a holiday in Boston this Summer. I am gutted I didn't even hear of this place. And although their website is pretty, it takes a while to find the directions and I couldn't find a map.

The neat thing is, if you play England backwards, you get American history... civilized society gradually de-evolving to warlike clans.

[bm] - It was two weeks after my intro to the H'bakery. Had I known then what I do now, I wouldn't have gone.

Only kidding! The next time the Jb roadshow rolls into town...

Jinbish: How odd that you couldn't find the directions to a map.
