Ok, here goes.
Guns release a lot of energy very quickly in the form of hot compressed gas. Gas Dynamic lasers use hot expanding gas and a nozzle to create a population inversion. So, why not create a supersonic nozzle on the end of a gun barrel and create a laser beam at a right angle to the flowing
gas.
As far as I can tell, any obstruction at the end of the barrel will cause problems in the gun exploding but 'eh. Some estimates put a 44Mag produces at 1MW of power.
Also, an explosive mixture with the right vibrating chemicals will have to be created for the blank cartridge.
So, screw on your gas dynamic laser to the end of the barrel and go lasering! whoohoo!

Say there is about 15.000 Joule in the cartridge (rifle) - Gas dynamic laser with 30% efficiency -> ~ 5000Joule in the beam = 1200 calories = the energy required to heat 1200g water by 1° (or 12g by 100°); |

[+] for making a weapon less fearsome. |

So, this laser would develop about enough power that I could use it to point at something up on the whiteboard at a meeting? And we will all need to wear hearing and eye protection? |
|

[bigsleep]: ... or accelerate a few grams of lead to the speed of sound ... but for heating purposes it's not that much; dazzle the enemy, make him dizzy (with the question why the rifle looks so bulky and does so little) - very much a non-lethal weapon, therfore a bun. |

So, for lasing around corners? |

Well, [bungston], if the idea should transition into an application for that purpose, I could use that. |

It would certainly make it easier to draw people's attention to a key point during one of those poorly run meetings that drift off course. |
