Genetically-engineered worms keep the grass trimmed.

Genetically-engineered worms. They eat only grass, and only while standing up, gripping the grass stalk, They would only eat the upper part of the stalk. During the day, they burrow underground, fertilizing the lawn areating it, and keeping out from underfoot.

They breed quickly, but don't migrate more than a few inches from home territory. Numbers held in check by grass growth and degree of trim.

If you're going to get into the business of genetic engineering, just engineer the grass to grow to the desired height. Which in this case would be a 'standing' worm.

while you are gm'ing, make them taste bad so birds won't eat them. Genetic modification seems too close to magic for me at this point in time.
