In situations where several people have to share a washer
and
dryer (apartments, dorms, etc.) the washer and dryer would
be hooked up to a network and would notify their user
when
their laundry is finished. Users could also check the
network
to see when the machines would be free and maybe
also
add
their names to the waiting list and be notified when it is
their
turn.

This was one of my pet peeves when I had to share a coin operated washer -- parading my dirty laundry throughout the complex only to discover that the washers were all in use. One day I thought that I'd check first. They were empty. I raced back to get my laundry, but when I got back, they were in use. |

Managing the apartment complex laundry room via an intranet scheduling service. Nice. Probably will come to pass, too. |

There's another idea floating around, very similar to this one, that involves pagers (I think). |

Holy cow - this was here long before I posted Laundry Pager of which thou speaketh. confusionary is a visionary! |

A couple living groups here at MIT have somewhat rudimentary systems for this. One dorm has all their washing machines and dryers networked so you can finger them from any machine on the entire network, or look at the website to determine their availability and their current state. One of the fraternities has a system where you can call the washer or dryer to see if they are available for use. |

Add a webcam, too. And allow credit card reservations of individual washing machines or entire blocks of them for a short time period.
|
|
|
And while we're at it, let's add a purchasable concierge service and a chauffeur to toddle laundry back and forth from the room in a little golf-cart style apparatus. |

Even before I read the annos, I guessed that it had been baked at MIT. |

[jester], how about "high bandwidth" pneumatic tubes? |
