Some voters are discontent. They want to demonstrate that discontentedness to the powers that be with a vote that they hope represents a thumb in the eye or a raised middle finger to those powers. The problem: as opposed to a protest against what is, these votes in aggregate cause a new action to be.
This action may not be the intent of those who chiefly wish to protest what is.
I propose that every ballot be larded with alternatives such that people who are uninterested in the matters at play in the election but who wish to display discontent, or rebel spirit, or bizarrité can do so accurately. And harmlessly. Candidates might include Reagan, Hitler, Cromwell, Pikachu, Venus, etc.
Clever policies

In the UK, this role used to be performed by the Monster Raving Loony party. Sadly they seem to have undergone somewhat of a crisis of confidence in the face of the other parties moving into their general electoral space. |
