The muscles that close the human jaw are very strong. Generally not as strong as an alligators, but still quite impressive. The sport of jawboning determines who has the strongest temporalis and masseter muscles.
Jawboning is performed at a table, similar to arm wrestling. A symmetrical scissors-like
device is mounted above the table. Each end of the scissors has a rubber bit. Biting down on one bit opens the other. The winner is the person (or beast) who manages to open the others mouth one or more times, by closing his own.
(?) Training equipment.

Ouch. + for the people who talk too much. |

I often wondered if clenching at night (for which I wear a night guard) has given me strong jaws. I challenge anyone reading this to a duel! quick [ld]. make that thing and bring it over. |

"A symmetrical scissors-like device " |

With a scissors, both wrestlers could close their mouths at the same time. A symmetrical crowbar-like device would have the effect you want. |

robinism is right. Scissors wouldnt work. You close one end by squeezing the other. Maybe two flat V's attached at the point? |
Quite right. It looks like scissors, but isnt. Both look like >< in the neutral position, except with scissors, the top left is a single member with the bottom right. Here, the top left is a single member with the top right. |

For some reason, I think of donkeys when I see the title. Must be the thing in the Bible where Samson kills all of those people with the jawbone of a donkey. |
Nice one. Actually makes me have a headstart on most people after years of speed- and extacy-use. |

god bless the halfbakery. |

Trivial fact* Alligators jaw miscles are extremely powerful in the closing motion but not so the other way round. You could hold an alligators mouth closed with your hand- if only the critters would stay still... |
*I don't KNOW this is fact - I just heard it somewhere or maybe on TV... |
would you run the risk of dislocating the loser's jaw? bloody hell. "joe?...."
"JOE? oh my god.... your MOUTH...." |

There was something at snopes.com about two people's arms that got ripped of in a tug-of-war. They even have a picture. |

My old roommate broke his arm while arm-wrestling; I hate to think what could happen in this sort of competition. [-] |

<wildly off-topic> re [ldischler]'s
comment above, how about comedy
trick-scissors where each half is V-
shaped rather than crossing, thus
opening when they should close and
vice versa <wildly off-topic> |

this reminds me of my dogs. any two out of three used to play a game where they opened their mouths at each other in an attempt to see who could open the mouth the widest. actually the cat usually wins, she almost turns her head inside out when she yawns. |
NIce [po]. The question is, do the dogs accept the fact that the cat has won given that currebtly women are not allowed in the Open Championship. Times they are a-changin', though! |
what the Jawboning Open? both the female dog and the female cat won hands down. |
//actually the cat usually wins, she almost turns her head inside out when she yawns.//
I've tried this with my cat, but he always wins.
Plus his teeth look scarier. |
