Hot Tub Theatre
Combine the relaxation of a hot tub with the entertainment of the theatre. | |
Since at least the roman times people have gathered in public bath houses. Today they are swimming pools that are mainly used for excercise and play, or small hot tubs that are used for relaxation. I propose we extend this beyond relaxation and into the arena of entertainment.
A large shallow
hot tub can be built. Drained, it will resemble a modern movie theatre including comforatble chairs and aisles. Filled, customers (in bathing suits appropriate for the specific culture) file in and take their seats. Water comes up to your neck.
The lights dim, all that can be seen is a pale glow from under the water. The curtains open, and through the fog and mist you see a spectacular performance. What that performance is doesn't matter much - could be a comedy routine, an opera, ballet (water ballet?), etc. The point is you're relaxed in warm, bath-like water and enjoying yourself.

I have to raise the prolific public pool problem... what happens when someone pees? |
Just so long as there's no interrupting intromission. |
[rah] I thought of that (while trying to think up appropriate drink holders), and it's definately an issue. I guess it would be dealt with the same as in hot tubs by public pools. Generally there's a sign "No one under 18 allowed". I would hope adults can show some self-control. Intermission's a must. |

The Idea of the "hot tub theatre" sounds great(HENCE THE CROISSANT). You could have floating cupholders, and floating trays.......Would you hand out "waterwings" to the "non-swimmers? also would you have a sign at the door of the theater "YOU MUST BE THIS TALL TO ENJOY THIS MOVIE"? |
Floating cupholders/trays - very nice. Waterwings, not frowned upon but not provided (no swimming necessary). Must be this tall - probably, though adjustable chair is possible. |
Wouldnt you either need a separate tub for every row, or eliminate stadium seating? |
Imagine all the prune-like wrinkled bodies after a 3 hour show... |
I wouldn't want the job of cleaning the "Baby Ruth" out of the filter at night. But you would eliminate the need to sweep the floors at the end of the night....... |
This sounds like a lot of fun. |
There is actually a cinema screen in Wet 'n Wild (a water slide theme park on the Gold Coast). It's in front of a huge shallow pool so people can sit or swim around lazily and watch a movie. Last time I was there nothing was showing, but it looked like a fun way to go to the movies. |
[shz] I was thinking of eliminating the stadium seating concept, but I like your separate tub row idea. Perhaps one aisle can have stairs to enter and find your seat, the other side a water slide to exit. |
[dish] That sounds great, but was it heated? I'd fear freezing my ass off but not wanting to leave and miss the ending. |
//isle// is probably a typo, but it makes a good pun. |
Sadly I've been misspelling it for years. What an odd word, aisle. Perhaps from now on I'll pronounce it as it's spelled (try it) and if that catches on someday others won't have my problem. |
That's it! Combine this with one of those floating sushi restaurant concepts. |
Nice! Nice! Nice! Maybe you can fit the screen really high and have everyone lean back... pretty much like at a planeterium. Still, a (+) for the concept. |
This rocks. I like the floating sushi bar thing, but what about something you could order on? You order on a water-resistant touchpad and a tray could be "aimed" at you. gah that's a bad idea. but i like the ordering part. help please? |
I was thinking, for a film, it would be neat to have a larger pool so you could float on your back and have the screen directly overhead. |
I've been letting this one toss around in my head for a bit, and I've finally concluded that I don't think I care for it much. I like hot tubs, I love movies, but somehow the twain ought not to meet, in my view. When I watch a movie, I don't like to do anything else besides watch a movie. |
Well, I assume you like to sit in a nice chair, waugs. This could be seen as just a different kind of nice chair. |
[ig], I'm sure there's a thousand halfbaked ways to solve the ordering problem. Perhaps it's as simple as a vender walking down the aisle, pulling a long chain of floating food/drink. When someone wants one they raise their hand, and it's floated down the row. Wait, paying might be an issue. I guess make it like the movies - buy it on your way in, and take it to your seat. |
Heated? I dunno, could be I guess. It's located on the gold
coast in Australia. It's generally pretty warm there so not
as much of an issue. You might get a nasty sunburn if you
forgot your sunblock though. |
[mad] I like it. More of a splash-around pool idea than what I was thinking of. May be good for families that are already used to distractions, but I was thinking of a calmer environment. |
Yes worldie, I appreciate the difference. That's why I gave you a (+) instead of calling 'baked'. |
a local theatre company in NorthernIreland is about to produce 'The Little Mermaid' for kids in the local swimming pool. I'll provide a link if I can. |
My old college did a pool-in movie night. The first one was "Splash". |
Aren't you supposed to get out of a hot tub after 15 minutes? That wouldn't even cover the trailers... |
15 minutes is not nearly long enough for a hot tub soak. I agree that 2 hours may be too much though - especially if it's quite hot. Perhaps add temperature control to each seat using seperate cold and hot water lines? |
