Replace paper currency with metallic coinage fabricated from various fissile materials. Those with low critical mass (protactinium-231, americium-243, plutonium-242) would be used for smaller denominations. Higher critical mass elements (californium-251, plutonium-238, curium-244) would be used for larger denominations.

Larry Niven published this idea as "another Modest Proposal" some time in the late sixties or early seventies, although I think he didn't discuss different materials in that idea.

It would certainly prevent the stockpiling of too much currency... There is an absolute limit on how much plutonium you can keep in your safe!

If this ever happens, my idea for the perfect murder: plate the inside of the victim's safe with neutron reflectors. Write him a big check. Run.

depends on if you can also describe a "perfect murder" as "messy"
