Metal bank notes can be more secure and last longer if they're in the form of mixed metals and other exotic materials and weigh in at 50 grams each. I picture rectangular bits of steel with hinges to let one or two fit in your wallet.

Nitinol http://en.wikipedia...iki/Nickel_titanium
Use a superelastic shape-memory alloy instead of steel. [TomP, May 01 2011]

The weight and volume would be an issue. But who uses cash these days anyway? If you must upgrade banknotes, use graphene or something, with an embossed wave-guide paintjob.

Rather than a flat sheet of metal, how about a small disk, embossed on each side?

That's just crazy talk. Round will never catch on.

I don't know about the metal fatiguing properties of Nitinol [link], and neither does Wiki (though it does touch on it), but if you made it out of thin sheets of this, you should be able to fold them as you wish and rather than checking for a watermark, anyone suspicious of your note could heat it up a bit and see if it folds out flat.

Wiki states that it is 'exceedingly difficult to make' (is // notation also used for external sources?) so probably isn't as easy as sticking hinges on a steel sheet, so the forgeries would hardly exist. Of course that would make it only any good for high value notes though.

I figure we should all just move away from physical money if we want to thwart underground economies.

I figure money has to move closer to me.

I have a mint bush - maybe it will grow into a tree.

Accuracy is always more of a detterent to counterfeit than materials.

       Ah [8th...], you mean 50.0 +/- 0.00000000000000001

Please, we're trying to confuse the issue here, and you're not helping.

I think the simplest way to state it would be 1.60753733 troy oz +/- 6,022,141 atomic mass units (+/- 465.73 MeV/c^2).

       Yes, but more depressing.
