This would be a warm winter hat, probably of wool and/or leather (also available in faux varieties of each material) with metal heatsinks such as thin copper wires running from the top of the scalp to flat, anodized copper plates clipped around the edge of the hat, sitting just behind the ears. This would help prevent one's head from getting uncomfortably hot inside the hat, while channeling that heat to warm the ears without having to cover them.
