Headless chickens for longevity research

Headless chickens have been kept alive abiut 2 years; feed them longevity drugs to discern which ones work from effects on the CNS and which longevity drugs work from the body side only

Long lived headless chickens are a thing. [link] They are fed with an eyedropper to the headless throat.

I think they could measure the difference between longevity drugs like deprenyl, that affects the substantia nigra of the brain, from things like metformin that affect the entire body. This allows the development of new longevity drugs that work on the body side, and by subtraction, those whose effects are based on the CNS.

This brings up a side issue in mammal research, could mice with obliterated connections to their spinal cord be measured as to longevity? Although test chemicals would reach the CNS, the communication to the rest of the body would be removed. That could elucidate new mechanisms of longevity like stimulation of sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system like adrenal, thyroid, or breath signalling that could then be the targets of new longevity drugs or treatments.

Aren't those long-lived headless chickens able to survive because their heads are chopped off incompletely, leaving just enough brainstem to regulate the basic functions of the body?

I think you might be thinking of politicians.

Was there more than one Mike the Headless Chicken?

       I thought that was a one-off.

Dog years are about seven years so how long are abiut years?

       First, catch your abiut.

I was just thinking of that headline the other day, along with "Foot Heads Arms Body" and "Galaxy Nexus Android Ice Cream Sandwich Guinea Pig". I forget what (new) headline reminded me of those, though.

It begs the question if men get that eunuch longevity boost if they just lop off one testicle. It didn't work for Hitler.

Given that chickens are head-optional animals, isn't it likely that geese are also? If so, the whole process of foie gras production could be immensely simplified.

I don't think I have to remind anyone that Mike was reanimated almost precisely 1 month after the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki were dropped. By then the fallout could have drifted far into Colorado chicken heads.
