Hair tug of war is exactly that. Each team member has his or her hair secured to a ring in the middle, over the pool of slime. Tug of war commences. This would be best for a Fear Factor type show, to allow closeups of grimaces.

Would this be aired on a pubic broadcasting network?

Makes me think of ear tug of war. A part of eskimo olympics. A string around my ear and your ear. We pull, it hurts. Great sport.

Interesting use of the definite article along with "pool of slime" as if a pool of slime is a required and traditional part of a tug o war event.
