I want to be able to generate a mosaic or 'pixellated' effect in real time, using only optical processes (i.e. no electronics).
Ideally, in a thin and small enough sheet to be able to look through it like spectacles.
It turns out you can purchase small lenses which 'pixellate' light, but these
unfortunately have a viewing distance of 20cm, which is too far for spectacles.
So here's the strategy I've come up with. The sheet is divided up into 'tiles'. For the process to succeed, we want to average the light incident on each tile across the whole tile.
The strategy I propose is to first focus the light (which we can assume is effectively parallel) to a point, randomise the light direction and then re-parallelise the light using a second lens.
In practice, this uses a lensing sheet (an array of small lenses), a frosted layer and a second lensing sheet.

"pixel mirror"

Pixel Prism Lens

Might want to turn down the volume.

Don't they have something like this already? If not [+], if so, that's what the bun's for. |

I was hoping they would, but couldn't find any online. |

Closest I could find. [link] 4 |

So I found a company selling hexagonally packed lens sheets. Maybe the lenses are a little small (they report 133 lenses per linear inch, which is about 52 per cm - I think the optimal size is probably about 1mm.) |
|
|
I tried to order a pack, but although the cost for a sheet is 5 euro, a) the listing says it's out of stock, b) the cost is listed in my basket as 50 euro; it's trying to put 10 in c) it then charges shipping, handling fees and VAT, the total order is 114 euros. And d) the minimum order is 150 euros. |

Which seems a bit excessive, I only wanted one sheet. |
