Our daughter is almost 1.5 years old, and is constantly grabbing at things, so we have to run to the rescue, so our hot drinks don't spill on her and burn her. Using magnets and hover-technology, the holder would levitate about 3-4 feet above the ground (adjustable of course), safely away from kid's (and/or pets') reach. Another option would have the holder suspended from screws in the ceiling...

Magnetic fields sufficient to hold a cup 3-4 feet above ground would be strong enough to cause major problems with any metallic or electrical items closer to the ground.

Allow her to grab and spill a very warm drink on herself - hot enough to be painful, but not hot enough damaging. Have earplugs to hand to muffle the ensuing screams.

This will be a valuable learning experience. After a few repetitions, grabbing will cease.

I'm sure there is a WHR sketch of the ceiling hanging furniture in the ‘Flat life’ series.

You could have the suspension cables hung from little motorised units running on tracks in the ceiling, so that you could steer the furniture round the house using a remote control. Elevation could also be adjusted. Or the system could be computerised for automatic furniture adjustment.
