First Finger 4th of July

First to lose is first to win.

Each year here in the Colonies people succumb to bodily injury while playing with fireworks. The news media teams up with the fire departments to show safe ways of igniting the scant few pyrotechnics that cause the least injuries and then turns around to report on some poor soul who lost his hand in a HMBWT (hold my beer, watch this) stunt.

I propose that the local media keep a running tally, thoughtfully located in the corner of the TV screen, of the number of such incidents that day that resulted in bodily injury throughout the celebration. The continuously updating figure could be a fraction such as 7/22 to indicate both the number of injury accidents and the number of body parts lost.

In this manner the media could quietly, tongue in cheek, hammer home the dangers of messing about with fireworks with an honorable mention for the individual who lost the first finger of the day.

With an "A" is "At rest"; with an "E" is ... a mnemonic I haven't come up with yet...

Y'know I didn't even know that the word had two spellings... all these years.
There's my something new for today. Thanks eh.
I finally get 'affect' and 'effect' straight and now if I want a stationery bike I need to learn origami.

       Uh... "E" can be embossed?

The mnemonic is that a stationer is a person, like the butcher, baker or grocer, and stationery with an 'e' is what they sell.

You can imagine the stationer standing in a little kiosk, called a station.
