Diversity Dish
A epicurian delight encompassing many classifications of phylum. | |
I was inspired by phundug's idea of Horscowgoadocabirwormspifly, but a variation of it. I was wondering if you could create a dish that encompassed all of the taxonomical Kingdoms of animals. I was thinking the casual definitions (mammal, reptile, amphibian, etc.) A quick trip to Wikipedia shows that
below Organism (implied) there are categories of Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species. I looked at the Domain, but found it too broad. Kingdom grew interesting with various versions over the years of 3 to 5 domains. This looked possible, to have a dish with Plant, Animal, Fungi and Bacteria, but without a further dig into the various types of Bacteria Kingdoms (are slime molds edible?), I figured that just Animal Kingdom would do.
So in the Kingdom Animalia are the various Phylems... Porifera (sponges)
Ctenophora (comb jellies)
Cnidaria
Placozoa
Bilateria
Acoelomorpha
Orthonectida
Rhombozoa
?Myxozoa
Superphylum Deuterostomia
Chordata (vertebrates, etc.)
Hemichordata (acorn worms)
Echinodermata
?Chaetognatha (arrow worms)
Superphylum Ecdysozoa
Kinorhyncha
Loricifera
Priapulida
Nematoda (roundworms)
Nematomorpha (horsehair worms)
Onychophora (velvet worms)
Tardigrada (water bears)
Arthropoda (insects, etc.)
Superphylum Platyzoa
Platyhelminthes (flatworms)
Gastrotricha
Rotifera (rotifers)
Acanthocephala
Gnathostomulida (jaw worms)
Micrognathozoa
?Cycliophora
Superphylum Lophotrochozoa
Sipuncula (peanut worms)
Nemertea (ribbon worms)
Phoronida
Ectoprocta (moss animals)
Entoprocta
Brachiopoda
Mollusca (mollusks)
Annelida (segmented worms)
All in all, it got a little heavy, so I threw away the scientific definitions, and came up with my own dish of taxonomical diversity...
Chive (Plants) &
Cream Cheese (Bacteria) mixed with
Ants (Arthopod/Insect) wrapped in
Jellyfish (Cnidaria) with
Snails (Mollusk/Gastropoda) and
Scallops (Mollusk/Bivalvia) stuffed in a
Tarantula (Arthopod/Arachnea) wrapped in a
Starfish (Echinoderm) with chopped
Tuna (Fish) stuffed in a
Lobster (Arthopod/Crustacean) stuffed in a
Chicken (Chordata/Vertebrata/.../Avian)
Sea Turtle (Chordata/Vertebrata/.../Amphibian) stuffed in
Crocodile (Chordata/Vertebrata/.../Reptile) stuffed in a
Great White Shark(Chordata /Vertebrata/.../Chondrichthyes) stuffed in
Giant Squid (Mollusk/Cephalopoda)
Sperm Whale (Chordata/Vertebrata/Mammal)
Yum! What would PETA think?

There was a famous geologist (I think)
who tried to eat his way through every
phylum. though not all at once. I'll
seek a reference. |

Oh, and slime moulds (Dictyostelium at
least) are edible. Well, drinkable really.
Not a gastronomic highlight. |
|
|
Ah. It was Rev. William Buckland,
geologist/palaeontologist. |

Interesting info - thanks Basepair! Talk about a balanced meal! I forgot to throw some mushrooms (fungi) in for good measure. |

You could just cook the whole lot in
beer - yeast. |
