Distributed Olympics

Olympic events held in several cities simultaneously

Every four years, cities vie to become the host of the Olympics.

While some argue it gives the host city some cache, it generally costs the host city more than they gain. The host city scrambles to build overflow capacity and sporting venues that are often never used to capacity again. Generally this results in a net negative for the city's ledger.

Also, residents of the city have their daily routines interrupted while international crowds throng to their city.

What I propose is that during the Olympics, several cities are selected, each hosting a certain set of events, according to their ability to host.

For instance, Atlanta might have the High Jump and 100 meter dash, while Tokyo has pistol shooting, rowing, etc. etc.

This way, no host city is overburdened with visitors, nor stuck footing the bill for the overflow capacity. More cities can experience the "glow" of being an Olympic city.

Also, this allows smaller cities who would not otherwise be contenders, to host Olympic events.

       "Perfectly logical, Spock."

Spock silently gives Jim the stare.

"But the Olympics are not logical, more like tribbles don't you see."

Spock doesn't see. Goes off in a huff.

It would be fun to try - long ocean swims in areas with lots of sharks.

Quite a lot of international travel between events for the decathletes though...

// Atlanta might have the High Jump and 100 meter dash, while Tokyo has pistol shooting //

Atlanta - or many other U.S. cities - could combine the two quite easily, with the 100 metre Dash For Cover eliding smoothly into the Shooting Unarmed Black People With A Pistol event.

       Oh, wait ....

All the athletes could stay at home, and compete individually against the clock. The footage of each athlete could be combined into a split screen view or even using CGI to make them appear to be competing alongside each other.

[pocmloc] this would require real skill in the synchronised swimming event

Well aren't Olympians meant to be really skilled at their "sport"?

Does this mean we'd have to sit through 27 different opening ceremonies?

Blogger [Fat Cyclist] used to sponsor the " Hundred Miles to Nowhere " event. The rules were flexible - you had to log a hundred miles on a wheeled vehicle or reasonable substitute and submit a report.

People did them on stationary bikes, around their own block umpteen times, etc.

The opening ceremonies would be simultaneous
