I can picture this getting out of hand pretty quickly, at
which point it would be virtually indistinguishable from a
regular demolition derby. |

Checkmate! Checkmate! Checkmate! |

You paid for the whole square, but you'll only need
the edge! |

[+] I love this!! Demo-Derbies are fun and chess makes me think too much! (And there is that black & white checkered flag!) hah! |

As I am part hillbilly and do enjoy a good crash-up (local
parlance), I should vote for this, but I just can't picture
successful integration of chess. Chess is a game of
strategy, which, as we all know, is what you have until the
shooting starts. Or, in this case, the crashing. |

How would the knights move when surrounded? |

//How would the knights move when surrounded?//
back up - take a left
back up - take a right
repeat going forward...crash! |

Ok, I'm a little unsure of your rules here. In chess, the attacker always wins. If you continue that rule into this game, you're going to need Variable Vulnerability Vehicles. (Excepting the King, of course.) |

If you don't do that, then the outcome of any particular attack becomes uncertain, and it's a very different game. |

I think you'll need a crane to reach out and hoist away the debris - which could be a solution for the knight-move, as well. |
