A new automatic message is played when you call a dead cell phone, like "We're sorry, but the cell phone you have dialed (555-2614) is currently unavailable, due to an uncharged battery or other product malfunction. [insert pre-recorded user message, such as 'You can always try my house at 555-1379
or, if its an emergency, call my parents at 555-8500.']."
Yeah, right now I'm stuck up at my parent's cabin with a dead cell phone and no charger, and with two jobs, and two trips starting in two days, this would be quite handy right about now.

What are you, a geek or a mouse? Get out your soldering iron; I'm sure you know what voltage that phone needs to charge. What's that? You need parts to build a charger? Go take apart your parents' phone or something... You've got two days, after all... |

email me and I'll phone 'em for you :) |

Exactly. Use the net, luke. |

How would it differentiate between 'dead battery' and 'off'? |

I like it because if your girl friend calls when you have a dead cell phone she will know it is dead and she won't think you are ignoring her |

What if you want to ignore your girlfriend? You might want the phone to 'pretend' to be out of battery... |

It makes me stop for a second in life to think what kind of message a fifteen foot high pile of dead car batteries in a junk yard would be trying to transmit to the world. |

The good bit of this idea is that the message would be triggered when the battery runs out. Unfortunately, as [waugs] already hinted, there is no way to differentiate between a mobile phone that can't be contacted because its battery is dead and one that is off/out of signal range. I suggest you simply set your voicemail message to point to your alternative numbers. [-] |
