The phrase 'crumpled heap' comes to mind.

When viewing a DVD, sometimes one will miss a subtitle and wish to see it. This is especially true on DVD's where subtitles are used for informative text rather than dialogue. My suggestion would be to have the DVD player keep track of the last few (non-blank) subtitle cues it had seen, and have a button to go back to them. In addition, a button could be added that would automatically fast-forward until the next subtitle cue.

Isn't it. But surely the software complexity required to do this would be an insurmountable challenge?

Not sure the memory buffer will be big enough to skip back that far.
