These cylinder shaped pieces would fit in the pool rack taking up the same space of the balls, but instead of rolling, would slide, requiring you to hit them much much harder. They'd block the paths of the rolling balls and could be used strategically to block the other player's shots.
Call them
"pool blocks" or something, maybe have 4 of these in a 12 space rack and use them to strategically obstruct the other guy's shots.

It's a slippery slope to crazy pool. Soon you'll have little windmills and flippers on the baize. |

Good point, could also start putting in ramps, diverters etc. Where would it stop? |

I know back when my playing pool every Wednesday it was just an excuse to shoot the shit and drink beer, so I'd probably have been down for stuff like this. My question would be to any of these: "Can I still drink beer? Then let's try it." |

//cylindrical... not rolling...//
This could be a problem.
However, I think I have a solution.
If the cylinder is highly weighted to the bottom, it will only roll if given a very large side impact (& then will find a new equilibrium position some diameters away); or will slide with a direct end impact. (Angled end impacts will do all sorts of funky moves.)
So you could use it as more-or-less a "fixed" structure, unless you really want to move it someplace new.
Not sure about using "prescribed starting positions" (as per the balls) or "placed as desired during the game" as the rule... |

I was thinking they'd be the same weight of other balls but yea, the weight would all be at the bottom so they didn't tip over. So they'd be movable like the balls, just a lot less so every skill you'd developed as a pool player would have to be re-learned with moving these blocker pieces. |

Be interesting to play around with various incarnations of this. Be really easy to do, Sunday afternoon on the 3d printer. |
