Crashed cars by the side of the road

If a car crashes or breaks down and is stranded at the roadside, other drivers will look and slow down, often causing more accidents. This is just irritating and silly - it's like these people have never seen a Saab with a flat tyre before. The obvious solution is to make stranded cars such a commonplace occurrence that no one would ever bother looking at one. Thus, this idea is to line the sides of major roads with crashed or broken cars so that when someone actually does have to stop at the roadside they will be hardly noticeable.

It's all his fault! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noah_Webster

I suspect this would result in a lot of ignored medical emergencies.

       Or, just stop manufacturing Saabs.

would they be safe to use as motorway barriers?

//these people have never seen a Saab with a flat tyre before//

I, for one, haven't. WTF is a tyre?
MikeD, Apr 24 2011

Maybe when people went to the new world it was a paradigm shift somethin akin to the Internet and writing tyre as tire and colour as color was a kind of 1337 speak.

Lo, all our pomp of yesterday
Is one with Nineveh and Tyre!
pertinax, Apr 25 2011

but Tyre doesn't rhyme with day!

When I was young I always imagined that the port of Tyre would be a little like the grottier parts of Southampton Docks, with mountains of used rubber waiting to be recycled.

...I take it you've never driven into New York City?
xandram, Apr 25 2011

Concept Addendum: Crashed cars could be left where they crashed, or just off the road nearby. Then their frequency would indicate how dangerous this portion of the road was, like the crosses beside the road that show where people died, indirectly showing how deadly a road section is.
briancady413, Apr 26 2011

Taking this idea to it's logical conclusion, one might propose that victims of fatal accidents be left where they fell.

More sensible to just teach drivers to drive.
Twizz, Apr 26 2011

Bizarrely, this is baked. If you travel the roads between any two cities in India, you will find the roadside littered at regular(ish) intervals with the wreckage of crashed & burnt out lorries. After a while you get used to the sight.
DrBob, Apr 26 2011

[briancady413,] our industrious European neighbors to the south in Greece have come up with a similar albeit less ugly concept. When driving there I am always very careful on a 3 or more Shrine Corner. Those neat little white mini churches are an excellent guide to the potentially treacherous nature of the next mountain bend.

[PainOCommonSense] - Indeed, in some countries, roadside shrines would be a very reliable indicator of road safety. They should be marked on satnav maps.
[fishboner] "Random Package Moth"??! <quick search> Oh yes, I'd forgotten about that.
