A bit like jury duty or national service.

For about three weeks once in your life you get called up to help out. It's compulsory unless you've got a really good excuse and you are randomly allocated a task.

Potential jobs would be:

-Conservation work.
-Hospital porter/laundry assistant.
-Litter Collection or general clean-up of public areas.
-Traffic Warden.
-Lollipop person.

etc.

Keep it on a volunteer basis. Those who don't want to volunteer don't deserve the gratification that it brings.

A good idea for the younger set if compulsory. Certainly better than the draft.

add 'politician' to the list and I'd be in. it should be mandatory service for youth, but that would be socialist wouldn't it?

Very Utilitarian. But I'm not sure if I'd want such tasks done by what would be a very half-arsed workforce.

Lollipop person... never heard that one before. Is that the person holding the STOP/SLOW sign at road work areas?
waugsqueke, Mar 08 2002

No, the school crossing partol person. But you guessed right, its the round sign on the poll that gives them this name.

Bleh -- It's hard enough to reconcile a draft with notions of liberty. This should never fly, and I'd certainly never do it. What's so important about litter that you have to go to the extreme measure of forcing someone who was minding their own business to take care of it? Jury duty at least is intended to do justice, and is an extremely narrow exception to the rule.

"What's so important about litter that you have to...take care of it?"
It's a great lesson in why you shouldn't litter. And there's no reason the jobs shouldn't offer minimum wage.

No, being fined for littering is a good reason why you shouldn't litter.

This is being fined for not picking up someone else's litter. It doesn't bear any incentive to prevent people from littering, and the knowledge that someone else will have to pick it up is probably going to encourage littering!

"Once in your life" should be a part of school's physical education (#1 among great course names) curriculum. Tell the first and second year kids to enjoy their field trips to the dairy and to the newspaper printer because most of their lives they'll be taking out the trash and cruising about looking for a clear parking space.

I think part of a kid's high school credit should be based on community service. Kid's might like it because it's more exciting than a basic sit-in-a-desk-with-a-book class, no one feels like a dork since everyone has to do it, and it strengthens the bond between the individual and the community. I think this could be a good thing in a day and age when many kids couldn't give a shit about respecting authority or their surroundings. Also, because you get a grade for the class it's less likely that people will half-ass the work.
