For about three weeks once in your life you get called up to help out. It's compulsory unless you've got a really good excuse and you are randomly allocated a task.
Potential jobs would be:
-Conservation work.
-Hospital porter/laundry assistant.
-Litter Collection or general clean-up
of public areas.
-Traffic Warden.
-Lollipop person.
etc.

Bleh -- It's hard enough to reconcile a draft with notions of liberty. This should never fly, and I'd certainly never do it. What's so important about litter that you have to go to the extreme measure of forcing someone who was minding their own business to take care of it? Jury duty at least is intended to do justice, and is an extremely narrow exception to the rule. |

This is being fined for not picking up someone else's litter. It doesn't bear any incentive to prevent people from littering, and the knowledge that someone else will have to pick it up is probably going to encourage littering! |

"Once in your life" should be a part of school's physical education (#1 among great course names) curriculum. Tell the first and second year kids to enjoy their field trips to the dairy and to the newspaper printer because most of their lives they'll be taking out the trash and cruising about looking for a clear parking space. |

I think part of a kid's high school credit should be based on community service. Kid's might like it because it's more exciting than a basic sit-in-a-desk-with-a-book class, no one feels like a dork since everyone has to do it, and it strengthens the bond between the individual and the community. I think this could be a good thing in a day and age when many kids couldn't give a shit about respecting authority or their surroundings. Also, because you get a grade for the class it's less likely that people will half-ass the work. |
