Chocabuse

A way of avoiding temptation

One of my colleagues can't eat chocolate becuase it gives her terrible migranes.

Now, being able to avoid chocolate isn't a problem, as long as I'm not bored, hungry and have actual chocolate in sight. It wouldn't be a problem for me to have enough willpower in a morning to take a pill that would cause me to have a terrible headache when I ate some chocolate - the same way that Antabuse affects alcoholics. That way, when I was tempted, I woudl definietly be able to "walk on by" the vending machine ....

I would be richer, slimmer, and healthier in no time.

So the idea is for a one-a-day pill for chocaholics that gives you a headache or makes you sick if you eat chocolate. Maybe you'd miss a pill on alternate saturdays and sundays so you could have an occasional treat.

Do you have any chocolate flavoured Chocabuse?

       Demi-Pain au chocolat.

Are you sure you wouldn't just eat the chocolate and suffer the consequences? It may take a while for the conditioning to sink in. The other option is to buy one of those five pound bars and eat the whole thing at once, get violently ill and never touch chocolate again. A lot of people apply this technique to tequila.

It could also be used in a liquid form that could be discreetly added to another person's food.

<drool> rbl, the problem with those five pound bars is that, once you've had one, you're just about ready for the next one.</drool>

rbl: I've tried that. It doesn't work. I've tried it with tequilla, and that DID work.

BinaryCookies: That would be mean. I see this as a voluntary aid to self-confessed chocaholics who are trying to cope with the stigma of their problem (and ever-expanding waistline). So maybe this would be a prescription only thing.

       DrBob: Yes. Oh, yes.

so this disproves the diminishing value of returns theory? doesn't that first bite of chocolate always test better than the 400th?

Once every six weeks or so I go buy a litre of chocolate milk (1%!) and a jumbo double chocolate muffin. Consume in equal quantities and then moan for 12 hours about how crappy I feel.

       Antabuse is pretty nasty stuff:

Disulfiram (Antabuse) plus even small amounts of alcohol produces flushing, throbbing in head and neck, throbbing headache, respiratory difficulty, nausea, copious vomiting, sweating, thirst, chest pain, palpitation, dyspnea, hyperventilation, tachycardia, hypotension, syncope, marked uneasiness, weakness, vertigo, blurred vision, and confusion. In severe reactions, there may be respiratory depression, cardiovascular collapse, arrhythmias, myocardial infarction, acute congestive heart failure, unconsciousness, convulsions, and death. The intensity of the reaction may vary with each individual but is generally proportional to the amount of disulfiram and alcohol ingested. In the sensitive individual, mild reactions may occur when the blood alcohol concentration is increased to as little as 5 to 10 mg/100 mL. At a concentration of 50 mg/100 mL symptoms are usually fully developed, and when the concentration reaches 125 to 150 mg/100 mL unconsciousness may occur.

The duration of the reaction is variable, from 30 to 60 minutes in mild cases, up to several hours in more severe cases or as long as there is alcohol remaining in the blood. In severe reactions, supportive measures to restore blood pressure and treat shock should be instituted. Other measures such as the administration of oxygen or carbogen (95% oxygen, 5% carbon dioxide), massive i.v. doses of vitamin C (1 g), ephedrine sulfate, or antihistamines i.v. might be indicated. Potassium levels should be monitored particularly in patients on digitalis since hypokalemia has been reported.

warning on aspirin: may cause headaches.

BinaryCookies: Yes, that sounds like what's needed. I can't see anything less nasty that that stopping me munching chocolate.
