Part of my job involves querying databases, producing reports, and e-mailing them to various recipients. I work with four others doing similar stuff, and our practice is to copy each other (and our manager) into all e-mails, so we all know which reports have been sent, to whom, and when - we're not concerned
with the contents of the reports, just that they've been sent.
I would like my e-mail client to allow me to send the message and attachments to the primary recipient(s), but to send only the message to the secondaries (the Cc: list), so as to avoid sending multiple attachments through the network unnecessarily. The Cc: list would instead see just a listing of the attachments. [Edit: If the files are on a local network share, the list could be hyperlinked.]
I realise that I could achieve the same result with two mailings, but I would often forget.

Yes, with bells on. Excellent. |

While this is a good idea on its own, it does make me wonder why, if this is something that is done on a daily basis, presumably for the same reports etc, why they're not published on a web server, network drive, or similar. |

I used to do a similar job, and got so sick and tired of it, that where possible, I looked into automating the process, or having users connect via an internal web-page, that allowed them to run their own reports as and when they needed them. All that was left for me to do was kick back, relax and read the 'bakery. |

[hippo] this is not really a related idea. and both have been given a bun by me. |

[zen_tom]: That exact process is followed for most reports and most recipients. However, some reports are compiled from various sources and require complex post-processing, and some recipients are not able to access the company network.
[Ian]: Huh? |

Brilliant idea! It's really hard to believe that it's not available now, but I'm damned if I can think of an email client that does this. Eudora is going open source, maybe someone will build it in. |

[angel] Aha - it does sometimes cross my mind what it is about our collective demographic (if there is such a thing) that allows many of us to spend a fair proportion of our working lives posting to a website. Not to mention wondering what I might one day achieve if I got round to actually doing some work. |

I like it, but it would need to be a configurable option. Some people might want to send the attachment to those on their CC list. Ideally, it would be a checkbox next to the CC field, i.e. Do not send attachment(s) to CC list. |

[flynn]: Quite, hence the phrase "I would like my e-mail client to allow me...". |

Seems that email systems could be better. I've wanted this function for some time. |

[angel] I like your suggested design. |
