Full disclaimer - I dreamed this last night.
Although in the dream, the firearm had the capability to chamber both standard 12 gage shells AND cans of cat food, it would occasionally mix the two in one cycle and I would have to clear it manually.
The cat food can load fired with the removeable
pop-top facing out, and although the range was limited, the dispersal of the can contents upon impact in the target zone was satisfactory.
I confess that I don't have a practical application for the tool, but just bringing one to a coffee fight would be a satisfying experience.

having a go - a barrel made up of three arcs of metal.
When firing the can of cat food a mechanism expands
the arcs giving a gap between each. The cans are
effectively running on rails. A special alternating
firing mechanism switches between a pin or the
charge cap for throwing cat food. |

Thanks for taking a shot at that problem. If I had one of these I'd never load it with anything except cat food - life is complex enough already. Chambering a fresh can and a charge cap at the same time would be an amusing exercise in mechanisms. |

Well, just as bird shot cartridges are red or black, and buck shot is green, you'd want a dedicated color for cat food. Probably different colors for fish, beef, and poultry. My cat prefers chicken over all others. |

Not even that, it's possible to launch both full and empty steel cans from a cardboard firework mortar using 3F black powder as a propellant, but the recoil for a full 400g can is pretty fierce, and they can do a hell of a lot of damage to whatever they hit. |

What's needed is two identical cans, one full, one empty, and a 2000mm long cardboad tube. The empty can is filled with water to the same mass as the full one, and the open end wrapped with cling-film. The launch charge can be as simple as recovered firework composition. This is bagged and taped to the base of the full can. The two cans are pushed back-to-back into the tube, and centred. |
