Full disclaimer - I dreamed this last night.
Although in the dream, the firearm had the capability to chamber both standard 12 gage shells AND cans of cat food, it would occasionally mix the two in one cycle and I would have to clear it manually.
The cat food can load fired with the removeable
pop-top facing out, and although the range was limited, the dispersal of the can contents upon impact in the target zone was satisfactory.
I confess that I don't have a practical application for the tool, but just bringing one to a coffee fight would be a satisfying experience.

Can Cannon

//confess that I don't have a practical application for the tool |

It's very practical. Shoot some cat food to lure a prawn, than when he comes to get it shoot him. |
I watched a PBS special on dreams last night. I think. I
can tell you about your dream, but know nothing
about cats, food, and delivery systems. I think. |

I think Freud would have some ideas.

//just bringing one to a coffee fight// - I thought this one was just a little bit weird, until that line. WHAT is a coffee fight? |
Could be you're still asleep? Might explain the whole exercise of getting online, navigating to the halfbakery, and posting this? It's a dream? Fu@k... am I asleep? |
P.S. normzone, if you are reading this and you can look back a second later and still read it, you are NOT dreaming. And now you have to try it. |
Wouldn't a gage changing barrel be in the realms of
magic? |
having a go - a barrel made up of three arcs of metal.
When firing the can of cat food a mechanism expands
the arcs giving a gap between each. The cans are
effectively running on rails. A special alternating
firing mechanism switches between a pin or the
charge cap for throwing cat food. |
Now that's the mind of a skilled weapons designer at work. Reminds me of that guy in "Mystery Men" who specialized in non-lethal weaponry - Dr. A. Heller (Tom Waits). Fun movie. |
Thanks for taking a shot at that problem. If I had one of these I'd never load it with anything except cat food - life is complex enough already. Chambering a fresh can and a charge cap at the same time would be an amusing exercise in mechanisms. |
I can see a market opening up for special narrow single-serving 12 gauge tins of cat food. |
Well, just as bird shot cartridges are red or black, and buck shot is green, you'd want a dedicated color for cat food. Probably different colors for fish, beef, and poultry. My cat prefers chicken over all others. |

Now if it was tuna oil he threw at the guy, it would
leave a lasting impression. Hence the practicality of a
catfood gun. |
According to a dream interpretation book, here are
the meanings to the dream... |
To see or shoot a shotgun in your dream means that
you need to better focus your energies toward your
goal. |
To see canned foods in your dream symbolizes the
emotions that you are keeping inside. |
[Shotgun]
Phallus, obviously
[Can] Mother-figure, provider (of food) - also a container, and thus a womb. |
I was thinking this might be a method to shotgun a can of cat food as one might shotgun a beer. Cats lack the lips for such an endeavor, I think. In case this sense of "shotgun" is American vernacular I will try to link a video. |
You know, with the whole AR 15 lower " build your own specialty gun " kit thing, this is a lot more practical than I initially thought it would be. |
With a lower charge, you could adapt a motar to be carried. They could take a can with maybe a chamber insert. |
A varnished stock with 'catasizer' carved into the handle might finish it off nicely. |
Not even that, it's possible to launch both full and empty steel cans from a cardboard firework mortar using 3F black powder as a propellant, but the recoil for a full 400g can is pretty fierce, and they can do a hell of a lot of damage to whatever they hit. |
Best to fire in the upper register and use soft ground to absorb the shock. However, they can be (and have been) shoulder-launched with excellent results, using the same principle as the recoilless Davis Gun. |
What's needed is two identical cans, one full, one empty, and a 2000mm long cardboad tube. The empty can is filled with water to the same mass as the full one, and the open end wrapped with cling-film. The launch charge can be as simple as recovered firework composition. This is bagged and taped to the base of the full can. The two cans are pushed back-to-back into the tube, and centred. |
When the charge fires, the projectile is launched toward the target, and the countermass goes in the opposite direction - but once it leaves the tube, the cling film detaches, and the water disperses, leaving an empty lightweight container with little momentum. |
The actual projectile is capable of disrupting a row of police riot shields at 200m, well beyond the range of baton rounds, and has a 30% chance of inflicting an immediately lethal injury; it nicely outranges all existing low-lethality devices available to law enforcement, and can even disable soft skinned vehicles. |
Accuracy is poor, so volley firing is indicated for maximum effectivness. However, a double-whammy attack, using solid rounds to break the line followed rapidly by a salvo of improvised petrogel rounds, indicates a capability of inflicting better than 70% incapacitating injuries with only a modest increase in launcher tube requirements. |
A proof-of-concept "Katyusha" design which mounted eight parallel tubes on the roofrack of an unmodified passenger vehicle provided an excellent "shoot-and-scoot" capability, transport for multiple reloads and crew, and improved accuracy and lower dispersion out to 400m due to the more rigid firing platform. All that was needed was a dozen cheap ratchet straps to retain the tubes; they can be transported loaded, and with a little ingenuity fired electrically from inside the vehicle. With practice, two crew members can reload in less than five minutes. |
That's one hell of a shower of cat food! but it would be good for disrupting those large chowders of marauding cats. |
