This is not a range-finding laser but one that displays a visible dot to show where you’re looking:
“Wow, check out that Prothonotary warbler, a rare specimen. See my red dot? Wait I see yours – move it up to the left. Whoops I blinded him. He’s lying below on the ground now.”
