Most night-flying bats make distinctive ultrasonic clicks when flying.
The proposal is for a set of augmented-reality goggles equipped with four microphones and audio processing equipment that can locate multiple bats within the wearer's field of view and display moving bat symbols in different sizes
and colours according to the estimated species of bat (the squeaks are unique to each species); it is even possible (although difficult ) to identify an individual bat by its unique "voice".
That is all.

Won't this produce a long string of bat images like a string
of sausages from where the bat emits it's sonic chirp to the
point of impact with a solid object then back to the bat &
beyond? In fact not just a string but an expanding cone. |
Three or four bats flitting about back & forth are going to
cause you glasses to go black with overlapping bat images in
all directions throughout your field of vision. |
Congratulations! you just invented sound activated
sunglasses, worn at night [linky] [+]. |

// a long string of bat images // |

No, it doesn't have "trails" - just a little image of a bat (or bats) that moves as the software quadrangulates on the strongest source with that "signature'. |
//No, it doesn't have "trails"// |
The //Pure entertainment// value (of watching
wearers, maybe even carrying a few bats for release
in their presence at opportune moments) has (for
me) been severely curtailed. |
Well, you can turn that feature on if you pay for the software upgrade ... |

That's what they told Sturton. "Lifelike" the advertisement
said. "Real Hair!" they said. "Speaks over 100 phrases" they
said.
"Voices other than Simon Cowell are available at an extra
cost", they did not mention. |

We never got a chance to tell him. We only got as far as "All bodily orifices fully functional" and he threw down the payment, grabbed it and ran. |
He never even came back for the free extra set of batteries or the complementary bottle of water-based no-stain lubricant... he's quite weird at times. |
What do you mean, "at times"? |
Well, when he's awake, and most of the time when he's asleep except when he's actually unconscious through drink. Then he's just repulsive. |
What we're talking about here is some glasses that can hear
frequencies you can't hear because they're too high, and
then use that information to project symbols representing
things you can't see because it's too dark. |
If MaxCo. decides to implement this, our first move would
be to cut out the microphones and sound analysers and
simply display plausibly-moving symbols. An advantage of
this is that our goggles will enable you to see a much wider
range of bat-species-symbols. Be the first person to spot a
vampire bat in your neighbourhood! |

So, nothing more than a simple but elegant fraud, beautifully engineered to separate the gullible and credulous from their hard-earned money with the absolute minimum of effort and risk ? |
And some claim the old skills are dying out. No wonder your family's done so well over the centuries ... |
//engineered to separate the gullible and credulous from
their hard-earned money// No, we can't do gulls. Just the
bats. |
That will probably Tern out to be a good thing in the end. |
