Equifax, TransUnion, Experian. Credit rating agencies that deem people as either financial assets or liabilities based on financial situations and histories. These numbers are used to your benefit or your detriment, depending on your fiscal responsibility. They heavily determine borrowing rates, which can either save or cost you a lot of money.

Imagine an agency that rates businesses based on more than just financial history, but on different metrics such as support to community, local sourcing of materials, pay disparity, sustainable development, complaints & resolutions, etc.

This rating would in turn control the rate at which this business is taxed. It may control other things, as either incentives or disincentives.

Businesses would apply for a lower rate through an application process that would require evidence of their do-goodery, to include things like receipts, salary records, community endorsements, etc.

A worse thing to lose than financial capital ... [8th of 7, Jan 02 2019]

Keep the government's dirty fingers out of the capitalist pie.

Don't get me wrong, regulations are necessary to prevent monopolies and avoid tragedies of the commons. But pay disparity, "sustainable development" and other things you're probably imagining should not be regulated. This entity would wield a huge amount of unchecked power and inevitably result in corruption and black markets.

       Who mentioned the government?

You don't have contact info for their personnel department by any chance ? After all, large-scale random uncontrolled evil is one of our specialties.

It would be a good thing to do (Voice's objections notwithstanding...I distrust the government but distrust the private sector more). This would be the informational equivalent of belling the cat. I don't realistically see anyone having the means to make it happen.

How odd. After all, the private sector is quite open about being in it for what they can get, and are blatantly greedy, explotative and unscrupulous liars.

The government is at least as bad and generally much worse, yet claim the moral high ground and invariably assert that they are acting "in the public interest" which historically has always proved to be untrue. Worst of all, they are incompetent. The private sector is a collection of venal thieving rogues, but the iron fist of market forces at least ensures that they are fairly good at what they do - there is little in the way of such selection pressures on governments.

There is. If you're not careful, your most capable citizens leave. Then, your country is enriched with the feckless, like jury duty.

This is correct; please note, however, that we wrote "little", not "nothing".

The irony of emigration is that it is usually the most talented and capable individuals who recieve a welcome from other nations, and they are also the most likely to spot the trends in their current location and "bale out". Thus the country is depleted of exactly those who are needed to help improve the situation.

Since the loss of talent is usually a subtle trickle (altho Britain suffered a bout of national angst about the "Brain drain" in the 1950's) and the consequences not immediate, often not showing until years or decades later, and since governments are generally more focussed on the next three to five days, by the time the problem is recognized officialy, it's too late.

Persecuting any minority within a population can sometimes have the same disastrous results. Hitler's insane policies drove out a lot of Jewish people ... including the clever Jews who helped build the atomic bomb.

It looks as if trust in government integrity is down here (not that I'm disagreeing, I mean, I work for the government). And that's okay. Don't worry. It's like having $1 million in credit card debt with no possible solution. The only thing you can do is smile and whistle as you walk down the sidewalk. In the rain. In the middle of the night. In some slum. Carrying a Gucci bag.

Amazing ... only the 4th of January, and the prize for "Understatement of the Year 2019" has already been won.
