Asphyxia Stargate

A swirling vortex of illuminated gas and a bus trip to an Egyptology exhibit.

The construction of the Asphyxia Stargate is inexpensive and straightforward. A round frame is constructed from any number of materials, and is detailed and painted with metallic spraypaint. The frame is an entrance to a small square room with the same dimensions as the frame's diameter. A powerful fan faces the rear wall of the room creating a negative pressure. A block of dry ice fills the room with smoke, as some blue lights illuminate the swirling haze.

       What?
MaxwellBuchanan, Feb 12 2013

Had to finish this one in a hurry, sorry. A Stargate is the fictitious invention at the centre of the Stargate Sci-fi franchise.

The idea here is that any number of unsuspecting travellers enter this Stargate, become asphyxiated by the carbon dioxide displacing oxygen, and are then taken on a bus trip to an Egyptology exhibit.
rcarty, Feb 12 2013

Ah, right-oh. So the real Stargate leads to an Egyptology exhibit? I was somehow expecting more...
MaxwellBuchanan, Feb 12 2013

The "real" Stargate led to a world that exhibited many similarities to ancient Egypt.

//The "real" Stargate led to a world that exhibited many similarities to ancient Egypt.// Strange.
MaxwellBuchanan, Feb 12 2013

Yes, some would say stranger than fiction, or as strange. Although now I'm not certain what you mean when you refer to the real Stargate.
rcarty, Feb 12 2013

I see two problems: 1) the gas won't be dense enough to block the view of the room behind it. It will look like a room full of smoke. 2) carbon dioxide poisoning.

Will you be embalming and mummifying the travellers? You wouldn't want them to feel under-dressed...

Why not just use a real stargate?
not_morrison_rm, Feb 13 2013

A real Stargate would be ideal, but in reality only an ideal Stargate is possible which unfortunately is not real and thus not really ideal.

I have an old one in my garage that I'm not using anymore. You can have it if you want.

I mostly used it to store boxes, but the energy bills got high enough to the point where it made more sense to rent a storage locker, or just get rid of the old crap and buy new stuff in the unlikely event I ever need it again.

The problem with moving your Stargate around the universe is that the best way is to take it through another Stargate, only they're all the same size and don't collapse or come apart...
Alterother, Feb 13 2013

       //don't collapse or come apart...

In the Haynes manual it clearly mentions the bolts on the back, at least in my interpretation of the hieroglyphs.

Whitworth mind you, none of this metric nonsense.
not_morrison_rm, Feb 13 2013

//they're all the same size //

Perhaps an innovation would be to make them oval so you could tip one on its side and slip it through the other. The downside, of course, is that you require a receiving Stargate on the other side so can only really send one to where there already is one. Still, you would have the advantage of already starting at the furthest point along the chain.

Yes, but unless you put them together exactly so, they default to the men's loo at Union Station.

//but unless you put them together exactly so, they default to the men's loo at Union Station.

The heiroglyphs? I'm not sure you can spell "union train station" in them. What would be the point?
not_morrison_rm, Feb 13 2013

+ I would go if I didn't have to be asphyxiated. Sounds a bit like an LSD trip.

Why not just go to the museum and look at the Egyptian exhibits?

For those not near a museum, you can find pictures online.

       Am I beanf literally boreing?
pocmloc, Feb 13 2013

//        Why not just go to the museum and look at the Egyptian exhibits?   //

Because this simulates the mystery and awe of the movie it is based upon.
Alterother, Feb 13 2013

//The downside, of course, is that you require a receiving Stargate on the other side so can only really send one to where there already is one.//

Makes you wonder how the initial delivery took place. Fed Ex?
RayfordSteele, Feb 13 2013

// I really want a Haynes manual in hieroglyphics.

I have almost the full Set.
not_morrison_rm, Feb 14 2013

       Would Chinese suffice?
RayfordSteele, Feb 14 2013

I'd like to amend the idea to include a slippery slide that is obscured by the carbon dioxide haze, that descends into a pit of cold dense carbon dioxide.
