A special mini coliseum about with a 20' diameter pit with super-smooth sides for ant colonies to fight in for sport. Ant breeders would keep, breed, and grow ant hills in half circle containers with 5' radii. A container would be combined with another and set in the arena for a match.
"Today in
the Arena we have the Peruvian Bullet Ants verses the Argentinean Army Ants!"
"Those Bullet Ants sure look dangerous."
"And they are, Bob. Their poison can render a human unconcious for 18 hours! And they are huge! At one inch long, they are the largest ants in the world."
"So those Army Ants stand no chance then, do they, Fred?"
"Actually they'll probably win, what they lack in size they make up in quantity."
"There must be thousasnds of them swarming around!"
SPCA or other orginizations wouldn't complain, because they are just ants.
Sounds like the Sand Kings...

amusement from cruel sport.... ants have feelings too |

Can't be much crueler than just keeping the ants in a 'farm'... At least they get a bit of a work out this way... |

One of my favorite short stories, DC |
|
|
have you ever seen ants fight? they're vicious, ripping off legs and heads with their mandibles. |
|
|
When I was a lad I used to be fascinated by ants (infact, I still am). |
|
|
One of my favourite pastimes was to quarter-fill an empty plastic ice-cream tub with water and drop "islands" of mud into it. I'd then proceed to scamper about the nether regions of the garden, collecting all manner of creepy crawlies to maroon on the slowly dissolving mud shores. Woodlice, earwigs, spiders and ants were the generic catch. Ants ALWAYS survived the longest (sometimes for days on end). |

Thats funny - You couldn't really expect to see the words "humane" and "death sport" in the same sentence; making sense outside of the 'bakery. |

The sandkings...Now that was good story. |
