So you get one of these hot show-runner guys to come up with
a high-concept miniseries idea, with plenty of sex, violence,
and intrigue, and then team him up with a modern classical
composer, and they rework the show into a thirteen-episode
OPERA. Think Breaking Bad with baritones...

According to Wikipedia there are 4 major opera composers alive currently, which seems to indicate that |

a) there are also a number of minor opera composers, and |
|
|
b) operas are being composed. |
|
|
Also (c) that opera is not particularly popular. |
|

The concept might not be too far off the mark, however;
several successful long-running series have done musical or
'opera' episodes, including Joss Whedon's 'Buffy the Vampire
Slayer'. A number of television actors and directors have
come up through New York's musical theatre scene. |
