So you get one of these hot show-runner guys to come up with a high-concept miniseries idea, with plenty of sex, violence, and intrigue, and then team him up with a modern classical composer, and they rework the show into a thirteen-episode OPERA. Think Breaking Bad with baritones...

Sort of like this then? [DrBob, Sep 28 2013]

After all, a lot of classic operas HAVE lots of sex and violence and intrigue, right? Maybe just adapt one of those...

soooo.... what you're suggesting is a long modern opera with intermissions, televised.

According to Wikipedia there are 4 major opera composers alive currently, which seems to indicate that

       a) there are also a number of minor opera composers, and

       b) operas are being composed.

Also (c) that opera is not particularly popular.

The concept might not be too far off the mark, however; several successful long-running series have done musical or 'opera' episodes, including Joss Whedon's 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'. A number of television actors and directors have come up through New York's musical theatre scene.
