The 'artists' could make no actual claim to the works, of course. I added the puppet theatre as a draw for the children, but it occurred to me that it might be a tad too violent for them.

after the alien hand produced its masterpiece, would it just hand it over to an entrepreneur such as yourself or would it put up a fight? |
Thanks for the clarification, [Jim]. Given that information, I have to award a fishbone for attempting to exploit people with the condition. |
[half] I am afraid that it may have been my half-guided remark that led you to that conclusion. |
The surrealists and Dadaists would've been interested in creating art by this technique, and I believe I've read that they actually experimented with something like it. |
seeing that these limbs seem to have a *mind* of their own so to speak, I don't see that anyone can experiment with them? |
from that link //According to the Israeli researcher, all patients can do to control the problem is to keep the hand ``occupied'' by having it hold an object// unless giving it a pencil would work?? |
You can experiment with anything - that's the cool thing about experimentation. I propose the following fun experiments. |
1)Poke the arm with a stick - see if it smacks you. If so, it might not like being poked with a stick. |
2)Ask it to write something. If it does, it probably can hear you. |
3)Assuming the results of 1) and 2) were both positive, ask it to paint something for you. If it doesn't, poke it with a stick. |
ok, now that Jim has explained it... WOW that is creepy! Thank you for bringing up such a horrible subject. Why don't you give me a nice paper cut and pour lemon juice on it? (with apologies to William Goldman) still, as a therapy tool, it may have possibilities. It is still a bit exploitive and as I would not be able to tell if the art had actually been created by this condition, how could I spend money on viewing it? an interesting, yet fishboned Idea. |
[world] I thought about 2. and asking nicely too, but discounted it immediately as I have yet to see a hand with ears but you are right that is very narrowminded and unscientific of me. |
Perhaps moris code? If I was an alien arm, I'd definately learn moris code. |
I think I read about this in Oliver Sacks; very disturbing. I don't see how it's exploitive to ask people with this condition to make art. +
[beauxeault], are you talking about automatic writing? |
morris dancing for alien feet or is that sick? |
Right you are, snarf. It was automatic writing I had heard about. Though I still think the Surrealists and Dadaists would also have been interested in Alien Hand Syndrome, and I wonder if there isn't some overlap between Alien Hand Syndrome and automatic writing. |
I believe automatic writing is part of a temporary state. |
Maybe I read more in to //The 'artists' could make no actual claim to the works// than was actually intended. |
Funny how some of these things aren't quite as funny the second time around. Guess the mood of the Halfbakery evolves with time. |
Might be like hearing a joke for the second time. Lucky for me, I haven't been around that long and can enjoy them as if new. |
Curry, yes, this clearly got off on the wrong foot. The lighthearted intent was quite evident the first time around. That time, there were no fishbones or negative annos. Now, someone takes offense and the whole idea tanks. I can attribute some of those bones to my loyal fan club, but the rest... well, whatever, no matter. |

<But is it art?>unconscious art extended whereby the conscious is truly unaware of the activity at hand - producing art.</But is it art?> |
its certainly food for thought and I thank you for it, waugs. |
Which is why I said the Surrealists and Dadaists would like this. |
//drop in the humor tolerance// More likely the inability of certain 'bakers like [half] to recognize as humor anything that doesn't start with "Knock, knock". Sorry for the derailment. I'll go play elsewhere now. |
Don't fret it, sir. It worked for "Dr. Strangelove", but you can't win 'em all. |

Clicking [Jim]'s link gives, "In accordance with Corporate Policy this page have been blocked by our SmartFilter since the page contains either sexually explicit, mp3 (radio/streaming media), nudity, dating, games, "criminal skills" or gambling related material." but I think I understand the condition. |
If someone is shot, is it the gun that kills, the hand using the gun or the person "using" the hand? |
This is quite bizzare waugsy! It could be quite fun to watch though... |
"No, not the yellow.. blue would look so much better there... call that a turnip?... Damn hand" |
I just came across this, and am absolutely baffled... |
