I was pondering the fact that Opera sounds so dramatic in another language, but perhaps the singing could be about taking the dog out for a walk or something equally exciting. Then I realised that a day where everyone talks in the style of opera would be, erm, unusual.

Spare me from having to do the Spandau Ballet http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MG_08

See? I was right about walking the dog or something equally exciting. [Ling, Jun 25 2012]

[+] Being a lover of musicals (even gag me with some) I just love to burst out in song at any given moment. Although this is somewhat baked by me, I'd love to see it happen on a grand scale.

The problem is that opera, even in your own language is almost incomprehensible. I'm reasonably certain that this is because opera singers are typically trained to sing syllables, not words, so they don't have to learn all the relevant languages.

Is there a world holiday category this should be in?

I'd like to structure one of the meetings at my workplace where the participants were required to communicate opera-style.

//singers are typically trained to sing syllables, not words// Like flight attendants?

I can only bun this if we can exclude Andrew Lloydd Wwebber.

//opera singers are typically trained to sing syllables, not words// Actually, they are trained to sing musical notes, not even syllables. They make their throat a funny shape to make that strange sound like hooting in a bottle. (q.v. ‘singer's formant’). That is why an opera singer is 100 times louder and 100 times more incomprehensible than an ordinary person singing.

Hmmm ... plenty of loaded belts to hand and a team of decent chaps on the Vickers guns could do no end of good, lock the doors and set fire to the place and when they try to escape , TA-TA-TA-TA-TA-TA-TA-TA-TA-TA ... the whole nine yards.

       Glorious.

Umm, [8th], I think you've confused it with the Spandau Ballet Day.

// Opera sounds so dramatic in another language //

Not that it's opera, but this is exactly whay Carmina Burana is so misused.

Since most of historical opera has no discernible plot, and is composed of arias, recitative, and choruses, this idea seems very suited for adaptation to the modern corporate work world. [+]

Extra points for accompaniment by traditional harpsichord.

On second thought, since most of the modern corporate work world has no discernible plot, and is composed of arias, recitative, and choruses, this idea seems very suited for adaptation to historical opera.

Non posso discutere su questo!

//Opera sounds so dramatic in another language// try listening to Benjamin Britten's Peter Grimes.

       OK, point taken.
