the 747 Aerobatic Display Team would consist of a
minimum
of nine aircraft.
Obviously, some of the more extreme aerobatic
manoeuvres
associated with smaller aircraft might be out of the
question,
but even a low-level flypast
by nine wingtip-to-wingtip,
nose-to-tail 747s
would be a sight to behold.

First thing that came to mind was the famous Boeing 707
demonstration flight barrel roll. Did a YouTube search,
typed in "707"... and it completed the "barrel roll" part as
the first thing on the list. |

wouldn't?) have low level, say 100, 200 feet 747 air races. |

I, too, didn't see the appeal until I read the words,

I don't think 747s can do nose to tail. And I suspect wing-tip
to wingtip requires a visually large separation. |

I know for certain that a smaller aircraft (Cessna T-37) can't
get closer than about 3 miles safely (may be less now, but
it's still significant) if the 747 has devices to break
it's wake vortices, or 10 miles if it doesn't. I would assume
another 747 could get a little closer, but not much. |

The wingtip vorticies aren't nearly as much of an issue when
aircraft have a lift/power surplus, such as when they're
empty. Large aircraft formation flying has been done <link>. |

My personal objection to this idea is based around the fact
that modern turbo fan engines are far too quiet. |

The Concorde has plenty of aerobatic potential. It was
(almost) routinely rolled during shakedown flights. Has a
huge power excess compared to the 747, the afterburners
help, is pleasingly loud too. |

Just going down memory lane here. I noticed that I
bunned most of Max's ideas which is telling
because we'd get in harmless tiffs from time to
time. Gotta give myself credit for never letting a
little good natured bumping of heads effect my
evaluation of a good idea. I even remember
thinking from time to time "Damn, gotta bun this
one". |

Anyway, this one's a no brainer and needs to be
done. We've all seen aerial shows but never one as
monumental as this. |

With the spate of 747 retirements, the cost of the
enterprise is falling dramatically. |

Only if you do all the maintenance. If you're pulling enough
G to write the airframe off in short order, not carrying
passengers, only flying on nice VFR days, then lots of stuff
doesn't need doing. Screw it, fly the beasts from a jet
trainer bolted to the space shuttle position. If it looks like a
dive is unrecoverable, or the vertical stab falls off, blow the
explosive bolts and fly back to base for a spare. |
