The problem with the Internet is that it tempts me to sin and/or waste money. I don't like this. I propose a "Google Glass" product combined with a custom web browser running on both computer and smartphone, which put the algorithmic maximization engines to work for me. Use of this product would be a lifestyle combining a Puritan Abrahamic religion with 80's cyberpunk. This is a countermeasure to the tiktok/amazon technology infrastructure which builds detailed profiles of all consumers then deploys those profiles across all internet-connected channels for the purposes of making a single global attention and consumption monopoly. The Puritan Goggles would help me to not sin. Key features: - context-aware push notifications serving annotated bible passages directly relevant to what I'm looking at or doing, displayed to my Google glass with both text and audio - sin-sensitive sunglasses feature which simply go dark whenever a certain threshold of ambient sin is met - short list of approved commodity products (food, clothes, etc.) to be ordered in bulk from high quality budget vendors - double confession and prayer service on the sabbath with the AI; chant sessions (essentially mindfulness meditation / breathing but louder and edgier) other days of the week - if widely adopted--- block negotiation for renting (i.e. collective bargaining for an entire building), voting (i.e. campaign conttributions), and socializing (i.e. faction reputation system for anyone interacting with the neo-puritan collective)-- sninctown, Apr 25 2021 Carey's book http://www.libraryt...88/summary/95806999 [pertinax, Apr 27 2021] //a countermeasure to the tiktok/amazon technology infrastructure//
[+], but would it implement a permanently disapproving version of Alexa?-- pertinax, Apr 26 2021 [+] I want the "hellfire and brimstone" version.-- Voice, Apr 26 2021 I agree with [a1], but if it helps one stay focused on good then heres some holy bread. +-- xandram, Apr 26 2021 //sin-sensitive sunglasses feature which simply go dark...// Out here in the real world, they will simply be black all the time.-- neutrinos_shadow, Apr 26 2021 I want a portion of my purchase to go toward a shelter for the homeless where people pay for having a safe place to stay with a heavy dose of religious indoctrination.-- Voice, Apr 27 2021 Morals and religion are two separate things.
I know for sure because I've got one of those things but have never been exposed to the other.-- 2 fries shy of a happy meal, Apr 27 2021 "Abrahamic Puritanism" is intended to convey a sense of individual religious experience, practicality, scholarship, conquest, innovation, austerity, and madness. It might not be understood as a religion at first. But that's OK. The Galactic Crusade i.e. settling millions of other planets with self-sustaining colonies, is at best a multi- generational project. "Sin" for the purposes of this idea is defined as not attempting to lay the societal and technological groundwork for the Galactic Crusade. Most people won't understand it, and many of those who do understand will think it is kind of nuts. That's OK too.-- sninctown, Apr 27 2021 .. and most will be carried along, just trying to stay afloat, in the momentum of it all.-- wjt, Apr 27 2021 Of course, in the 1640s, puritanism was an important force in starting to move England away from absolute monarchy towards democracy - and, among the anti-puritan thinkers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, you can see a rather sinister undercurrent of anti-democracy (which is well documented by John Carey - see link)-- pertinax, Apr 27 2021 Yes I always thought there was a kind of sad inevitability about the Protestant reformation. As soon as you throw off the authority of the Church and suggest that people read the source texts and make their own mind up, you are on a slippery slope to atheism.
I think the kind of Puritan Goggles that many would find most useful is where the augmented reality app overlays information and graphic depictions of everyone else being sinful. Walk in the park; a bubble appears over the warden's head saying "he steals from his employer". You see a young couple feeding the ducks, but the augmented reality shows them to be engaging in sodomy. You can look on and feel virtuous and superior to all the sinners around you. etc. etc.-- pocmloc, Apr 27 2021 And what are the ducks up to, when no- one's looking?-- pertinax, Apr 27 2021 Since the idea of "sin" is basically personal preference (or "do as the church tells you!" if you're that way inclined...), the set-up time for these will be extremely long, as you have to input all your particular preferences about everything.-- neutrinos_shadow, Apr 27 2021 Most people generally subscribe to a well-known set of philosophies. It wouldn't be hard to fine Sufism on a list and adjust from there.-- Voice, Apr 27 2021 How much would be the fine?-- RayfordSteele, Apr 28 2021 Don't try to finagle your way out of an answer-- Voice, Apr 29 2021 random, halfbakery
