I have actually gone as far as making several wind-up wheelbarrows. Yes they actually work. You can see it for yourself at www.springbarrow.com. I have noticed a lot of wind-up ideas on this website, and I thought it would be interesting to get the opinion of some wind-up innovators. We have lots of ideas for related devices. I can tell you that basically anywhere you might need the work of two people for a short distance, a wind-up mechanism could do the job. The springbarrow works very well, and as soon as the patent issues, you should see it for sale. For those of you interested, you can see the mechanism in detail on the US and European patent web sites.

This is not for sale although we've been asked hundreds of times to sell them. We have about 15 prototypes in use in construction/landscaping, for the last 3 months. Not a single failure. In the video that load going up the stairs on the plank is about 150-200 pounds. The unit bolts onto a regular wheelbarrow and weighs about 25 pounds. Probably would add $50-$75 to the cost of the standard wheelbarrow. Thanks for the input you guys. I think I've learned a lot already. Nick

Looks like an ad to me. Then again, a wind-up wheelbarrow is seriously half-baked, so if you've got any more ideas like that, we'd like to see them.

sounds like a novelty. most people wouldnt need it. especially people in kasnsas.

where is kasnsas? where is kaz - more to the point!

Nick, that demo video was just painful! Please hire a professional next time and boost the sound levels. The wheelbarrow looks nice, but the cranking looks like a chore.

Also, we like ideas that do not yet exist, as such.

Ditto what [k_sra] said about the audio. Very difficult to hear.

Lastly, you might want someone other than "Insane Xeo" to author your next video.

Oh, and welcome to the halfbakery.

Yeah. It wasn't even filled with anything. Not a really a jaw-dropping presentation.

Looks like an ad to me ... smells kinda fishy.

The clockwork looks like it would assist the user in moving it forward, but I usually find that the problem with handling a heavy wheelbarrow is in lifting the handles and keeping it from tipping left and right. If it’s light enough for me to do both of those things, pushing it forward -- even up an incline -- isn’t much of a problem.

Perhaps you could change the windup mechanism so that instead of a circular crank, you just step on a lever a few times. Fast, easy, less likely to spin and break somebody if the catch should fail. Just a thought. Plus I think your best selling point is the safety improvement. The work saved is minimal. The bones saved by not having to run to get up a skinny ramp or a slippery slope are a huge thing.

For the very patient, wheelbarrow with bamboo shoots, which grow in spring, so this is indirectly spring-powered.

The shoots grow, pressing on a lever, so propelling the wheelbarrow forwards, possibly up to a whole 1 ft a day. Watch out for speed-cameras.

I watched the video. Both of you are fired.
