fighters atop high springs, with a large K value, [imagine those springy things in playgrounds, but higher.] to swing the springs by balancing and lening and using the staffs, and then fight whilst swooshing around.

I'm not sure I understand this.. I think I like it, but I'm not sure. When you say those springy things in playgrounds, do you mean the chicken-esque things that go back and forward and then make you fall off sideways when the playground bully pushes it?

       this is low tech jousting

So basically that thing in Gladiators with the giant cotton buds (Q-Tips for our USian friends) with platforms that move around? Baked! My last Christmas ball had pretty much exactly that, although probably not as high as you had in mind. Definitely bags o' fun, especially when so smashed you need help to get on the platform.

damn CoolerKing, that would have been a sight!

I think I might have a photo somewhere, I'll see if I can dig it out, scan it in and post it. I'm not sure though, it might have been on my old housemate's camera.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: sword fights while standing/swaying back and forth on bamboo trees......

but, yes, I'd rather ride a springy chicken....

isn't there a prize if you can stay on for 8 seconds? oh, sorry, wrong sport.....
Susen, Oct 11 2001

I'll vote for this if the springs are placed among a set of cursed pools in which various people and animals have drowned in the past few millennia. Very sad story...

Slightly irrelevant, but have people ever fought with half-staffs or whole staffs?

'Actually, it's a buck and a quarter quarterstaff, but I'm not telling HIM that.'

Dictionary.com claims it was 'so called because in holding it one hand was placed in the middle, and the other between the middle and the end.' but I'm not sure I buy that.
StarChaser, Oct 14 2001

I buy it, you ever tried fighting with a big stick type thing?
kaz, Feb 20 2002

Yes, and while I know that's one way to hold them, I don't buy that that's why it was called a 'quarterstaff', as I said.

I happen to own a stick weapon one that i dug up it was tough to get it out out but once i did it was light as heel but very strong to dont laugh and i am very good with it. i was wondering have any of you hit yourselves with a quarterstaff because i have and 9t hurts for a couple mins. ans i was also wondering if you have ever seen a quarterstaff with a mace on each end?
Topken, Feb 04 2004

give no quarter? take no quarter? quartermaster?
ato_de, Feb 04 2004

I'm not with you, but i'm not to sure on the idea, its taken me ages to learn how to use a jo (stick weapon) and i would be really p*ssed if someone pick up your new weapon for the first time and bested me.
