Not baked, but this idea is completely fleshed out in a fantastic book by Daniel Suarez called "Kill Decision". In the book drones are created that work like insects in that they leave sent trails that communicate with all the other drones. The scent he used was modified pepper spray, because it is one of the scents that is both dense and industrially produced.

I'd recommend ALL of his books. He is an author that really understands tech. (link)
