On my profile page, there's a box for "password" - if I change this, does it not change my password?

//if I change this, does it not change my password?// Yes, but [xenzag] doesn't want to change *your* password

Ah yes, that would be so.

On your profile page there is a box for "password" but the only password you can enter there is the one you currently use, otherwise anyone could log in to your account, so the question remains: how do you change your password?
xenzag, Mar 01 2019

If I go to your profile page I don't see the 'password' box - only you see that.

Not IME. I changed my password using that box a few months ago, shortly after the site came back up and I saw it supported HTTPS now, meaning it was worth having a new password to avoid impersonation (even though I presume passwords are still stored unhashed, but I think I've never used the same password here as elsewhere so that's neither here nor there). I do recall a little bit of weirdness in how it operated, but I think that was just because of one or another of my 49* browser extensions.

*I counted just now; it may have been a different number back then.

Yes, I just changed my password using that password box.
MaxwellBuchanan, Mar 01 2019

What did you change it to?
hippo, Mar 01 2019

       I changed it to "password".

       Then I changed it back.

If I'm understanding this correctly, on my profile page, where the password box is with a row of asterix symbols, I can type in anything and that will be saved as my new password? I just don't want to get shut out by doing something stupid.
xenzag, Mar 01 2019

Oh, just send it to me, along with any credit cards numbers you have to hand.

// I can type in anything and that will be saved as my new password?// Worked for me.
MaxwellBuchanan, Mar 01 2019

Ok - thanks. That's clear enough.
