I'd vote for this if you suggested a means to an end.

One-way mirrors work by two effects: there is marked difference in illumination between the side you want to keep hidden and the side you want to observe; and the brightly illuminated observing side has its view through the glass confused by reflections of its own side.

They do not have a preference between letting light through one way over the other.

So... If you're happy to have a brightly illumunated bathroom, a tight light-seal around the shower and to shower in near darkness then this will work fine. If not then you'd better put some opacity in that shower curtain.

Total internal reflection on one side, and not on the other. Hmm...nope.

Very small holes. If you put your eyes right up to them, you can see through. Works both ways...nope.

Ok shinobi, I give up. How are you going to do it?
Ling, Nov 04 2005

       Why?

You're in your bathroom. The door is locked. Who's to see in? And what are you looking out at? If you're washing your wearwithalls, why should the colour of the carpet be of any interest to you?

Unless of course your shower is in the living room.

For the exhibitionist, simply turn it round.

st3f: given that the shower curtain itself shades our bath/shower, the light differential is in place already.

? Then there wouldn't have been a film classic!

(And I'm thinking that in the real world, just locking the bathroom door would have saved her, at least until she went down for breakfast.)

//Unless of course your shower is in the living room. //

       now there's an idea!!

in fact, why settle for the living room, why not a small bathroom extension on the front of your house, overlooking the street, made entirely from one way mirror... that would keep me amused for hours!

and that's just reminded me of something...[link]

I want a big box like that on wheels (a la po's streaker modesty umbrella) so I can roam naked around the city, yet completely encased... I wonder who's in the box? mmmm.

well hmmm...i wasn't expecting you guys to ask HOW so soon....

Just because you're a ninja, you can't use smoke and mirrors to hide blatant gaps in ideas while you're in the h-bakery!
Jinbish, Nov 04 2005

My daughter wants to create an account here so she can post this idea.

She wanted to make a double curtain so that the dark outer curtain doesn't close with the clear inner one because she doesn't like how dark it gets. When I explained that it would take two rods to do this, she suggested a police mirror shower curtain. (+++)

When I told her that it would be giving her idea away she said that it was ok because she just wants one.
